Customer rating is 3 of 5  The Good and the Bad   2010-03-20
By Y. Coffey (Austin, TX USA)
The Good:
Nice picture quality (for what it is)
Smooth Zoom
Lightweight and very portable

The Bad:
Broken out of the box (the mode switch didn't work). Had to have it fixed right away (it was covered through warranty)
Menus a little complex if you're trying to look at something quickly
In playback, the bottom of my screen has a black "border" that bounces up and down. I hate it but I'm not paying to get it fixed because I'm tired of messing with it.
As I type this, the battery is totally dead and unchargable. I need to buy a new battery.
The software that comes with it is not user friendly AT ALL. I've had nothing but problems getting the footage on to my computer.

I'm not complaining about the quality of this camera, its specs are all there to see. But what the hell is the point of the docking station? I suppose the designer thought it would save space on the actual camera. What you get: no on-board USB (not to say FireWire) port, no on-board DC charger. Okay, that's sort of basically annoying. What's completely unbelievable is how unreliably the camera actually connects -- physically -- to the dock (which has the USB and DC ports); I've spent the last hour (thank God I don't personally own this camera; it's a company's) pressing and holding various places uncomfortably with my fingers so the "access" light will stay on, or balancing rolls of tape heavy enough (but not too heavy!) to hold the thing in place, you know, watching the tides roll away, JUST SO MY COMPUTER WILL RECOGNIZE THE DAMN THING. The design's all sleek and fancy, using extra plastic to fancy it up with curves and such, but it's COMPLETELY DYSFUNCTIONAL. Oh, also your videos will be encoded in some proprietary codec which you'll need special Mac software to use should you be so arrogant as to easily want access to your footage on any platform.... Found that one out the hard way, too.
If it weren't part of my job, I wouldn't touch this camera with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.
Customer rating is 3 of 5  I have this camera for over a year using it moderately   2008-07-26

This camera has proven to be very convenient in size and features for the period of time it has worked. Feb 2007 - July 2008 with very little problems. I purchased it with no extended warranty, an extra battery and a good case for it. I have always taken care good of it , keeping the cover on and in the case when not in use. I also made sure to disconnect from computer through software before USB removal. I have used an average of maybe 90 minutes every two months since the purchase date. Im presuming most people would expect to use the same. All the features on the camera and convenience of size, HDD, extra zoom, 'okay' night mode, wide screen, etc. etc. is what may justify the price. Considering the extreme care and maintenance I provided, this camera is obviously not a quality made product from an electrical point of view. The power no longer turns on. Not with AC.. not with either battery... not even with the 30minutes of technical support tips. Sony says the warranty is expired and repair will cost $211.00. For an $800 camera at the time- brand new from a respectable seller, you would expect a better warranty. I should have asked, oh well. It seems I am not the only one having this problem. I guess I'll send it in for repair. The only problem is I needed the camera for the next two weeks more than the last year that Ive had it. The camera is great if you put convenience over picture quality. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY-- consider yourself warned.

This was a gift from my husband to record and photograph our trip to Disney. I am horrified at the video and especially the picture quality. I cannot believe this thing is on the market. Shame on Sony.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Fun, lighweight and reliable.   2007-06-18

I bought this product shortly after my daughter's birth to capture her precious moments. It is lightweight, and easy to use. The handycam has some cool features and the online user guide is certainly user-friendly. I was able to easily burn a dvd and even create a dvd menu.

The camera feature is useless. The photos come out terrible, and also very blurry, especially if the object is moving.

The quality of the picture is very good during the day, but at night the backlight feature does look a bit artificial.

Overall, a good camera for the price.
