Invented by Mitch Altman, a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur, the TV-B-Gone is a neat remote control device together with a single button. When activated, the unit emits 209 different turn-off codes for nearly each TV. The unit takes a little extra than a minute to cycle throughout all of the turn-off codes, but fortunately, codes for the much common TVs are emitted first. And for the reason that it's small, unassuming, and attaches to your key ring, you can always be discreet concerning offing this off-putting talking head.

Just believe, extra authentic and meaningful social interactions can be yours in seconds. Be prepared when the TV goes off, though; you may have to speak to those friends of yours at the table. I've had my tv-b-gone gen 3 for about 2 years now and I have enjoyed myself tremendously with it. I own many other universal remote controls but this one is the most idiot-proof one available. Simply point and shoot!

I appreciate the speed at which TVs go off but however, some common brands like LG take a longer time to turn off. In addition, it totally doesn't work on many lesser-known brands. To put it in a nutshell, it's my most efficient TV killing device. I'd like to term the tv-b-gone as "the world's most powerful keychain". No other universal remote comes close in speed and power. As a result, I have grown very fond of it.

Despite its strengths, it has its weaknesses as well. I can only turn TVs on and off using it, but with my other remotes I can change the volume, channel, mode, etc. After a while the tv-b-gone gets boring for pranking. I would say it is more of a TV killing remote than a remote for pranks. The funniest, coolest and most priceless moments in my TV-killing career came using other remotes. Also, the build quality is questionable, but I'm glad to see it has been improved in version 4. Moreover, I can't understand why all the codes cannot be stored in just one control. Why the need for 2 different regions? Some of my other remotes are much smaller, yet contain much more codes.

I have since switched off 690 TVs with the tv-b-gone alone, so I believe I've used it long enough to assess it accurately. The tv-b-gone is light but I can't understand why it is so bulky and huge. Honestly it is rather difficult to use discreetly and rather hard to justify having when you've been caught.

Having said that, the power of this remote remains one of its biggest strengths. The range isn't phenomenal, but sufficient for me to hit TVs comfortably.

Price-wise, I feel it is too expensive. Obviously Cornfield Electronics are making a huge killing with the high price tag. I estimate that the cost price of each keychain is less than US$4. Still, this keychain is worth buying and definitely a must-have in any TV-b-gone professional (or wannabe's) arsenal.

For those of you who do not own such universal remotes, they are one of the coolest gadgets available and have the potential to wreak much havoc and trouble. The happy, priceless, entertaining and mischievous moments I've had with these universal remotes make them worth much more than what I can ever pay for. I will continue switching off TVs, and though the tv-b-gone might not be my weapon of choice all the time, it certainly is up there among the best. Get yours today!

What's great about the TVBGONE is the range on it is amazing. You can activate it and shut off TVs from more than 100 feet away. It seems to activate most common brand TVs pretty fast as well. If you're trying to be discreet about it there is no need to point it directly at a tv, the reflection of almost anything will work. I should also mention that you can use this with laptops as well, it turns my Macbook Pro to sleep.
It's pretty funny to be able to freak out your friends with. A little pricey, but it's worth it for the a good gag gift or gadget for the collection. They only issue I had with it is the first one I received was faulty. I did get it replaced quickly though, so that's a testament to their customer service. You'll have a lot of fun with this!

If you go out a lot to public places such as malls, movie theaters, or malls; tend to disregard the rules; and like to "stick it to the man", this product is for you!
Think of it as a universal remote with only a power button.

Details:
*Fastest at turning off most popular brands of TVs, but has a huge range of TVs it can control
*Turns off ~and~ turns on
*A bit bulky, and really light. Seems it should be smaller and more compact.
*The button is good. Its whole design is simplistic.
*The plastic it's made of is of a good quality. It is medium-light grey, and a tad bit translucent. Very smooth exterior, with a square of raised printing on the backside.
*Has a pretty bulky key chain, not so good if you don't have keys. But easy to take off.
*Fun to be discreetly standing near a TV (or as far as 30 ft. away), pointing the remote at it, and suddenly see it turn off
*Great for impressing your friends
*Really can turn off almost any TV

I wouldn't say it is worth the amount it is priced at, but it's definitely fun to use.
The verdict: If you have some money to spare, get this. It's cool, and makes for some good times.

To all of the other reviewers that are having trouble with this little baby - GET A REPLACEMENT. Yours is clearly defective if it can't turn off TVs from across a dining room in a restaurant just sitting on your table. Mine works like a charm! This is the greatest thing to happen for human-to-human conversation in a LONG time, and the best $15 I have ever spent! When I was growing up, the only TVs in restaurants were at sports bars and pizza places that showed the games. Now, I CAN'T GET AWAY FROM THEM! Even in the nicer dining establishments... I just don't get it. When I go out to eat with someone, I'm going to spend time with them, not get distracted by the idiot boxes blasting me with images and commercials from every corner of the room! The TV-B-Gone looks much like a car remote when it's on your key chain, and as long as it's got a clear line of sight to the TV, it has switched off EVERY SINGLE ONE of the hundreds of TVs that I've used it on in the last several years. TVs in the student lounges when you're trying to study? DONE. Laundry-mat blasting drivel? OFF. Sushi bars with 360-degree-no-matter-where-I-sit-there's-the-freaking-TV? OFF, OFF, OFF, and OFF. Mexican restaurants that blare bad Spanish soap operas? ADIOS. Holidays at the in-laws and the TV on only because of habit? Bye-Bye Uncle Teevee. Nobody misses you. The best and most illuminating part is, hardly anyone EVER notices when the TVs blink off, and if they do, they just go back to having a real human interaction with someone that they are dining with. This product does exactly what it says it does - it turns the TV OFF. HALLELUJAH!

Though I did not buy this for the prank factor, my husband got a huge kick out of using it at Circuit City when the sales person was trying to sell a TV to a young couple. The "I-can-control-the-TV-with-my-mind" trick at a friend's dinner party was also a hoot, though that one was a team effort. We fight over who gets to carry it now, and I'm going to pick up another one so we can both have one.

I've had mine for over five years now, and it has never failed to provide the proper atmosphere for a serious conversation with my date, when we are schmoozing at a secluded table in a bar whose blaring TV suddenly goes dark. A Godsend.

It recently stopped working (remember, it's been over five years), and I learned from their excellent customer support that it has three batteries, not just one, and found easy directions on how to change them at their web site, [...] . I am back in business and appreciate not only the concept behind this device, but the fact that it actually works, every time -- as long as the batteries are less than five years old. I would gladly buy another, but mine still works fine.
