Customer Reviews

Customer rating is 3 of 5  Surface clever   2010-08-27

My Tom Tom Ease was a gift for Father's Day and it was simple to set up and use, on the surface. The computer voice calling out street names was very helpful, although annoying to my wife/passenger. The unit quickly recalculated a new route when I decided to not take its directions. I was able to go for over two hours on battery power alone, which kept me from having a cord hang from the windshield-mounted unit to my 12v outlet. The touch screen makes for simple access to the features I can use. When your finger touches a wrong choice, it is simple to go back and try again.

Another nifty feature is the display of speed limits and current vehicle speed on most Federal highways. In Kansas, where I live, the unit displayed the new speed limit within a few feet of passing the new speed limit sign. At some places in Colorado, where I recently traveled, it was not as accurate. If you exceed three miles-per-hour over the speed limit, the speed display changes from a blue background to a red one to encourage you to slow down. The vehicle speed indication matched my speedometer precisely.

The major complaint I have with this unit is the lack of instructional information available. The "user guide" is nothing if not brief. It will get you on the road for a straight-forward trip, but little else. Tom Tom's web site does not have an online manual for this unit either. I searched their site using their own search engine pulling down "Tom Tom Ease" and manuals. The search engine returned zero results although it appears there are manuals online for nearly every other model they make.

I'm certain there must be many features I could make use of, but I have no way of knowing how to do so. For instance, there is nothing to tell me, as a new GPS user, how to add a waypoint to an existing trip. If I am on a longer trip and want to find a restaurant, the unit helps me do so, but I cannot find a way to insert a stop at that location into the active trip plan. I cannot imagine that it cannot be done, and it is probably simple to do, it's just that there is no way to know how to do it.

I suppose for such a low price point, Tom Tom expects you will be happy for whatever you can teach yourself about how to use this product. I will keep searching and returning to the Tom Tom site. Hopefully I will find guidance soon.

UPDATE: Using another review service I found a reference to an online manual for the Tom Tom Start, which appears to be the European version of the Tom Tom GPS that is similar to the Ease. The English (UK) version is at [...]. This manual was helpful in learning about many features of the Tom Tom Ease. I can't guarantee that it applies in every circumstance, but it seems a reasonable substitute until a manual for the Ease is made available.

I like the ease of the ease!
Some people were saying that i does not have the capabilities to calculate the alternative route. That is not right. If you tap on the screen when your route already done, it'll give an option to recalculate alternative route. Try it.
What i can not find is how to set up alrets when driving over the limit. Mine would not alert me. If you guys know how to set it please let us know.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Extremely convenient   2010-06-13

What I love about this GPS: It is so small and convenient! Many GPS's are small, but when you add the car mount, they're no longer so convenient. The TomTom Ease has a suction built right into the back, so everything can fit into a small purse. No more fumbling for the car mount, spending time to disconnect it and store the car mount away. With the TomTom Ease, you just unattach it from the window and pop it into your purse.

I was amazed at how well the suction cup really sticks. It's supposed to swivel, but the mechanism for that is stubborn, so I wasn't able to swivel while driving. The suction cup folds down, so the entire GPS, including mounting, is smaller than my wallet--and my wallet isn't big.

There are, however, some drawbacks. First, the menus are difficult to navigate, and even changing the volume requires you to go through a few menu steps, not good when you're driving.

In fact, I recommend turning off the volume entirely. Several times, the voice didn't match the directions. The voice would say "bear right" when it actually meant "go straight". These were two-lane road that stayed two lanes, no lane-splitting, ramps, etc. When the volume was off, I had no trouble navigating, but when it was on, it was confusing.

Full disclosure: I received a test model to review but was not compensated in any way for the review. It's possible that the voice problem has been corrected since the test model.

I travel for both business and personal reasons frequently, so I store this in my glove compartment. It has never failed me yet, allowing me to save office locations, track where I am, find nearby restaurants and gas stations, and save the location of where I currently am in case I need to return there later (such as for car rental).

The TomTom EASE is small, light, looks cool, and easily attaches to wherever I need it. They make fancier versions, but this one is the right price for me, with all the features I wanted.

I'm not technologically gifted. This was easy to set up and use. I like the lane notice when turning (i.e. turn right then stay left...). It's been quite accurate and we've been off the beaten path.
